YouTube is bringing back the Premium Lite rate - but not like this and not everywhere else

YouTube is bringing back the Premium Lite rate - but not like this and not everywhere else

In September 2023, YouTube discontinued its Premium Lite subscription in the few countries where it was available. However, following a price hike for Premium, it appears to be making a comeback.

With the YouTube Premium Lite subscription plan, users could enjoy ad-free viewing on YouTube. The key difference from Premium was that Lite did not grant access to YouTube Music or the ability to download videos for offline viewing.

YouTube Premium Lite has become relevant again after the price of YouTube Premium increased in several countries, in some cases by as much as 55%. Rumors suggest that Google has restarted testing the YouTube Premium Lite subscription after apparently discontinuing it last year.

Jonah Manzano, an Australian singer-songwriter, shared a screenshot of Premium Lite on Threads. The subscription costs AUD 11.99 per month. Some users in Germany have also noticed the YouTube Premium Lite plan priced at €5.99 per month. Google confirmed that this is not the previous version of Premium Lite, but rather a test of a new plan:

“We are testing a different version of Premium Lite, and some users in Australia, Germany, and Thailand may see the option to subscribe.”

It is still unclear what the subscription terms will be or the final list of regions where it will be available. It is unlikely to launch in Ukraine, as the price of standard YouTube Premium in the country is much lower than in the EU or the US.
