About 10% of electric vehicle owners regret their choice of an electric car. This is indicated by the results of a survey published by the resource americantrucks.

For this study, the authors surveyed 501 American electric vehicle owners to learn about their experiences and disappointments regarding their car purchases. They also analyzed data from Google Trends in the 100 largest cities in the U.S., focusing on more than 20 terms related to complaints and regrets about electric vehicles over the past year. Based on the overall search volume across all terms, they created an index reflecting the level of regrets and complaints about electric vehicles on a scale from 1 to 100, where 100 represents the highest level of regrets and complaints.

The study concluded with the following findings about satisfaction or disappointment with electric vehicles:

  • 1 in 10 electric vehicle owners regrets their purchase.
  • Owners of BMW (20%), Kia (15%), and Tesla (10%) electric vehicles are the most likely to regret buying an electric car.

  • 22% of electric coupe owners regret their electric vehicle purchase.
  • 13% of electric truck owners regret their purchase.
  • More than 1 in 10 Tesla CyberTruck owners regret their purchase.
  • Generation X electric vehicle owners are the most likely to regret their purchase (15%).
  • New electric vehicle owners who bought their car less than a year ago are the most likely to regret their purchase (12%).
  • On average, electric vehicle owners charge their cars outside the home 6 times a month for 49 minutes each time. This totals 72 times a year, amounting to 58.8 hours.
  • On average, electric vehicle owners who regret their purchase charge their cars outside the home 10 times a month, which is twice as much as those who do not regret their purchase.
  • Electric vehicle owners spend an average of 4 hours and 54 minutes monthly charging their vehicles outside the home. BMW owners spend the most time (11 hours and 10 minutes), while Tesla owners spend 6 hours and 3 minutes.
  • Overall, 8% of electric vehicle owners plan to return to a conventional combustion engine vehicle.
  • Simultaneously, 85% of electric vehicle owners who regret their purchase plan to revert to a combustion engine vehicle.
