Several users in Hungary have reported that the Apple Pay service is experiencing malfunctions, charging thousands of dollars without any purchases. It seems that the issue remains relevant for a wide range of Apple Pay customers.
One Apple Pay user discovered debiting almost $1500 from their account as a result of 74 transactions. Other users from Hungary also report unwarranted deductions of small amounts. However, in total, the losses can be quite significant. This issue is manifesting among customers of most banks in Hungary.
Some of the incurred expenses may have been caused by previously canceled subscriptions. The amount withdrawn from the user's account matches previous transactions. However, this does not apply to all cases and does not explain dozens of fund deductions. Users have started removing their cards from Apple Pay to avoid erroneous transactions in the service.
The affected users have reached out to their banks, demanding assistance and a resolution to the issue of lost money. Banks have stated that the problem lies on Apple's side, and the company potentially knows about it and is working on resolving it.
OTP Bank in Hungary stated that there was a "massive, unwarranted debiting" from cards in various banks, and the situation is still being analyzed regarding what caused the problem. At the same time, a statement on the Raiffeisen Bank website claims that Apple is aware of the issue and is working on resolving it.
It seems to be a server-side issue. Fixing it will not require installing an update on the iPhone or other devices.
