Google is developing a new, standalone weather application for the upcoming Pixel 9 smartphones. This app showcases an even greater adherence to the style of the latest version of the Android operating system while embracing minimalism.
Last year, the company also launched a complete redesign of the existing weather section within the Google app, making the introduction of another weather program all the more surprising. However, this isn't the first time Google has operated under the principle of "more apps with the same functionality."
The new application will be part of the existing Pixel Weather, which was previously utilized solely for providing weather information on watches. Although the app will initially be available only on the Pixel 9 (as a preinstalled feature), it will later be extended to other Pixel devices.
The website Android Authority has exclusively obtained a working version of the app, which is likely to differ from the final release. Nevertheless, the application appears to be polished and offers a glimpse into the new features.
The app's minimalism is immediately noticeable upon launch. The background features a simple gradient that shifts from the top to the bottom of the screen, changing color based on current weather conditions. The most prominent element is the current temperature value accompanied by an icon that represents the weather conditions instead of a degree symbol.
Beneath the temperature, users will find familiar cards with information: hourly and 10-day forecasts, humidity, sunrise and sunset times, wind, visibility, UV index, and pressure. Interestingly, these cards can be rearranged by holding and dragging them.
Tapping on the 10-day forecast reveals a similar user interface based on widgets, though with fewer elements and unchangeable cards.
The location selection screen is typically straightforward but places slightly more emphasis on the current weather conditions and temperature compared to the previous design.
A drawback of the new app seems to be the absence of any animations (at least in this unfinished version). The existing weather app has a few animations in comparison.
