Valve, which announced plans to create a successor to the iconic Steam Controller two years ago, has moved from words to action. According to blogger Brad Lynch, Valve has begun preparations for mass production of the Steam Controller 2, codenamed Ibex.
The original Steam Controller was released in 2015. Instead of traditional analog sticks, the device featured two touchpads, simulating mouse functionality for precise aiming and menu navigation. In 2019, Valve discontinued production of the controller but incorporated some of its technical solutions into the development of the portable Steam Deck.
Codename for Steam Controller 2 is “Ibex”
Separate product from Deckard's “Roy” controller(s)
Both are being tooled for a mass production goal in their factories right now. That's why I know they're in later stages of productization

Lynch also uncovered references to a new Roy controller in the SteamVR code, described as a “stick” type. According to his sources, this device is also being readied for mass production. Roy may be part of the Deckard project — a standalone VR headset that has long been rumored as a wireless alternative to Meta Quest and a replacement for the aging Valve Index model.
Unlike the Index controllers, Roy will feature a unique capability — it can be used for both virtual reality and regular gaming. The developers equipped the device with a D-pad, bumpers, and a full set of ABXY buttons.
Valve has not yet confirmed this information.
