According to an analysis by Digital Foundry, Alan Wake 2 on the PS5 Pro operates at a relatively low resolution of 864p / 60 fps, which raises questions about the efficiency of the upgraded hardware.

PlayStation announced three key updates for the PS5 Pro: new hardware for ray tracing, PSSR scaling technology, and a 45% increase in rasterization performance. However, initial tests cast doubt on the effectiveness of these enhancements.

The Digital Foundry team conducted a performance analysis of the PS5 Pro using the game Alan Wake 2. This information was shared with their subscribers on Patreon, but users on the social network X quickly spread the key details from the video. The results showed that in performance mode, the game runs at a resolution of only 864p, while in quality mode it is 1260p. These figures correspond to the base version of the console, raising questions about the actual increase in power.

Comparison with other games also does not yield definitively positive results. The Last of Us Part 2 runs at the same internal resolution of 1440p as on the original PS5, only changing the scaling technology from FSR to PSSR. Assassin’s Creed Shadows also shows a low resolution of 864p in performance mode.

It is worth noting that the GeForce RTX 4070, which is considered a rough benchmark for the PS5 Pro’s GPU, easily achieves over 40 frames per second while scaling Alan Wake 2 from 1440p to 4K.

However, it's not all bad. Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart shows better results, running at a resolution from 1440p to 1800p / 60 frames per second, which was previously only achievable at 40 frames.

As noted by Digital Foundry, the PSSR technology, which aims to improve pixel quality rather than quantity, will play a key role in determining the success of the PS5 Pro. However, additional testing and analysis are needed for final conclusions.

Let us remind you that Sony announced that "approximately 40-50 games" will receive updates for the PlayStation 5 Pro by the time the console launches on November 7.
