According to the latest report from Jon Peddie Research, the PC processor market showed significant growth in the third quarter of 2024 compared to the second quarter. After a decline in 2021 and 2022, the market is finally recovering at a rapid pace.
In the second quarter, total shipments of PC processors were under 60 million units, a notable drop from the 75 million units in the first quarter of 2024. In the third quarter, shipments recovered to approximately 70 million units, marking a 12.2% increase from the previous quarter and a 7.8% rise compared to the third quarter of 2023. It's important to note that the third quarter of 2023 also exhibited significant growth, exceeding 15% compared to the disappointing third quarter of 2022.
The share of CPUs for laptops rose from 24% to 30% compared to the second quarter of 2024. Consequently, desktop PC processors account for about 70% of the market. According to Jon Peddie Research President Dr. Jon Peddie, China led the growth in PC processor shipments, with a significant portion attributed to Lenovo.
The market for client PCs continues to be volatile, with shipments fluctuating. However, the sharp increase in the third quarter is good news. The impact of AI computers, if any, is hard to quantify.
Shipments of integrated GPUs are also on the rise. In the third quarter of 2024, they increased by 7% compared to the second quarter, with an annual growth of about 6% compared to the third quarter of 2023. This is not surprising, as AMD and Intel have significantly enhanced their iGPUs on both desktop and laptop platforms.
The server segment also experienced growth, with processor shipments rising by 10.5% compared to the second quarter of 2024 and by 2% compared to the same period last year.
