ViXion01 autofocus glasses as a replacement for bifocals - when time is spent at the monitor or it is difficult to read as you get older

Journalist Sherri El Smith from Gizmodo tested high-tech glasses designed to enhance vision with variable focus. These are intended for those who require special glasses for reading as they age.

Over time, some people find themselves in need of bifocal glasses to read before bedtime. This issue arises due to aging and presbyopia, the gradual loss of the ability to focus the eyes. The Japanese startup ViXiON provides a somewhat futuristic solution to this need — the ViXion01 glasses.

The manufacturer claims that ViXion01 is the world's first auto-focusing glasses. They measure the distance to an object in real-time, ensuring optimal focus regardless of whether the wearer is nearsighted or farsighted. Although they may not be the most stylish glasses, according to the journalist, they are "incredibly effective."

"ViXion01 utilizes a pair of adaptive interchangeable lenses in real-time that adjust on the fly to ensure everything remains in sharp focus. Think of it like a phoropter, that oddly designed machine with various lenses that your eye doctor uses to prescribe your lenses."

The lenses of the ViXion01 change shape and thickness based on the distance to the object and individual settings. This eliminates the need for multiple pairs of glasses or bifocals. They can also assist individuals of varying ages who frequently look at screens. Adjusting the glasses is quite simple — there is a small dial on the right hinge for this purpose.

"The process is slightly more complex for a pair straight out of the box, but not too much. Since I already wear contact lenses, I did not expect to see a significant difference. However, when I looked at some distant signs, I was amazed at how clearly I could see all the large and medium letters. Smaller text was more challenging, but the company does not claim it grants you super vision — just an enhancement of what you already have."

ViXiON notes that the glasses are not approved for medical use and advises against using them while driving or performing other potentially complex tasks. The ViXion01 glasses require power and are rated for 10 hours of battery life, with mild water resistance (IPX3).

Weighing only 50 grams, the glasses are relatively lightweight. The main drawback of the device (or perhaps its appeal for some) is its unusual futuristic appearance. ViXion01 costs $555, but if someone wishes to test the device, it is available for $30 per month.
