At its annual fall event It's Glowtime, Apple announced the latest smartphone models—iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. The devices received a series of significant updates while maintaining the recognizable design of their predecessors.
One of the most noticeable design changes is the vertical arrangement of the cameras on the back panel. This not only alters the appearance but also enables spatial photography for viewing in 3D on Apple Vision Pro. Apple has also expanded the color palette, introducing five colors: ultramarine, turquoise, pink, white, and black.
The standard iPhone features a 6.1″ display, while the larger iPhone 16 Plus offers a 6.7″ screen—matching the sizes and refresh rate of 60 Hz seen in the iPhone 15 generation. However, the displays on the pair of iPhone 16 can achieve a peak brightness of 2000 nits and a low of 1 nit. Additionally, the protective glass has seen a substantial upgrade: the new ceramic shield is now 50% more durable than the previous generation and twice as strong as the glass used in any other smartphone.
The standout technological advancement in the new iPhones is the 3nm A18 chip. This new processor has six performance cores and four efficiency cores. According to Apple, the CPU is 30% faster than that of the iPhone 15 and can use 30% less energy, while the GPU is 40% faster and consumes 35% less energy. This likely allowed Apple to claim a significant increase in battery life for the iPhone 16.
The A18 also boasts improved gaming performance, making the iPhone 16 compatible with AAA games such as Assassin's Creed Mirage and Resident Evil 4, which were previously exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro. Additionally, the processor provides double the speed for machine learning tasks and has a 17% greater memory bandwidth, allowing for more efficient support of Apple Intelligence features“Apple.
The camera system has undergone significant upgrades. It now includes a 48-megapixel Fusion camera with a 2x telephoto lens and a new 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera that features an improved f/2.2 aperture for better low-light shooting. Apple also introduced a new generation of photographic styles to help users personalize their shots.
Both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus come with two new physical buttons. The first is the Action button, which was previously available only in Pro models. The second is a camera control button that allows users to quickly take photos and access various camera functions. A light press brings up a minimalist camera interface with zoom options. Apple also states that developers will be able to integrate this button into their apps, such as Snapchat.
The new models also support video recording with spatial audio for playback on AirPods, Apple Vision Pro, and surround sound systems. The Audio Mix feature allows users to adjust sound after recording, altering spatial balance and enhancing noise cancellation.
Apple also reports an increase in battery capacity and improved heat dissipation due to a redesign of the case, although specific battery life details have not been provided.
Prices for the new models start at $799 for the iPhone 16 and $899 for the iPhone 16 Plus. Pre-orders begin on September 13, with official sales starting September 20.
