Xbox consoles are struggling with weak performance, game sales are declining, and Microsoft is increasingly relying on Game Pass. Rumors suggest that the company is planning a separate handheld device and a main next-generation console.
Due to low sales, Microsoft recently made the decision to go cross-platform by releasing some games on Nintendo and PlayStation. However, it appears that the company is still working on its own next-generation consoles. To ensure that the new consoles don't follow the same path as their predecessors, some changes need to be made in their approach.
During a recent XB2+1 podcast, industry insider Jez Corden shared insights about Xbox's plans for a handheld device. Phil Spencer has hinted at this previously. He mentioned that the company needs to create something distinctive due to the saturation of the market. This has led to speculation that Xbox may attempt to merge the console and handheld markets, following in the footsteps of the Nintendo Switch, as the hybrid model is still underutilized by market players. However, Corden believes the handheld console will replace the Xbox Series S, while Microsoft will also introduce a traditional successor to the Xbox Series X.
“I’ll tell you right now, there will be a handheld device, and there will be a successor to the Series X,” says Jez Corden.
Fans can expect close integration between the two hardware devices. This could lead to support for Game Pass, cross-saves, and more. Based on rumors, the future Xbox hardware platform is said to be powerful, and the portable console could serve as an impressive addition to the lineup. Insiders indicate that the launch of the new consoles is planned for 2026.
