The Ukrainian gaming industry has received a powerful tool for development. On August 26, the second version of the video game terminology dictionary was released.

This update marks a significant milestone in the standardization of the Ukrainian gaming language. The new dictionary will help translators, developers, and players understand each other better. It includes current terms used in modern video games and related contexts. Standardized terminology will enhance the quality of localizations and contribute to the growth of the domestic gaming industry. Links to the first and second versions of the dictionary can be found here.

Here are translations for some terms:

  • grind β€” grinding;
  • slasher β€” slash;
  • multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) β€” multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA);
  • hack and slash β€” hack and slash;
  • let's play β€” let's play;
  • loot β€” loot.

The work on the dictionary began back in 2021, when the National Commission for the Standards of the Ukrainian Language organized a round table on "Standardization of Video Game Terminology." The first version of the working document was released on June 28, 2022. Over the past two years, experts have refined and expanded the dictionary to keep pace with the rapid developments in the industry.

A team of specialists from various sectors of the gaming industry has worked on the creation of the dictionary. This includes representatives from localization companies UnlocTeam and SBT Localization, as well as independent experts: translators, gaming journalists, streamers, and developers. The dictionary is distributed under a Creative Commons license with attribution on a non-commercial basis.

The updated dictionary aims to address several industry issues. Among them are the lack of established terminology, which has hindered the work of translators and decreased the quality of localizations. Additionally, the dictionary will help newcomers quickly grasp the specifics of video game translation.

The working group invites all interested parties to join in improving the dictionary.
