Shazam celebrates 100 billion song recognitions.
Shazam started as a SMS service in the UK in 2002 and became one of the first iPhone apps available in the App Store in 2008. By the summer of 2011, Shazam had recognized 1 billion songs, and in 2018, it became an Apple-owned app integrated into iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.
As of November 2024, Shazam has identified over 100 billion songs (essentially, about 12 for every person on Earth). According to Apple in a statement, it would take one person over 3168 years using Shazam every second to identify that many tunes.
"This monumental milestone reflects not only how much people enjoy using Shazam, but also their passion for discovering new music," says Oliver Schusser, Vice President of Apple Music and Beats. "We continue to innovate to empower music lovers around the world to hit the Shazam button no matter where they hear music!”
The most identified song by Shazam is "Dance Monkey" by Tones and I, with over 45 million requests.
