Sony has unveiled the second generation of its flagship camera, the Alpha 1. True to the company's tradition of confusing names, the new device is called the Alpha 1 II.
The original Alpha 1 was a versatile camera known for its high-speed photo and 8K video shooting capabilities. The Alpha 1 II has inherited a 50.1-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor, now paired with a new AI processor.
This has enhanced its autofocus capabilities, which can now detect a wider range of subjects, including animals, birds, insects, and various types of vehicles. The camera can also assess human poses and track them even while moving or turning their heads.
Additionally, the Sony Alpha 1 II boasts improved image stabilization, now rated at 8.5 stops in the center of the frame (up from 5.5 stops) and 7 stops at the edges. The new camera features a pre-capture mode that allows you to record moments just before pressing the shutter button, in case you miss the shot.
The Alpha 1 II has a new display with greater rotational flexibility. Unlike the previous model that moved on a single axis, the new screen can fully rotate in four directions. The electronic viewfinder has a deeper eye cup that comes standard. The camera body has also been redesigned for improved grip and more customizable buttons.
The new camera retains many of the same connectivity features as the previous model, but Sony has upgraded the Ethernet port from 1 Gbps to 2.5 Gbps. Finally, the camera comes with the new BC-ZD1 charger, which can charge two Z batteries simultaneously. The rest of the camera is largely identical to the original model from 2021.
The Sony Alpha 1 II will be available for purchase at a price of $6500 starting December 2024.
