It took just two days after the release of the modding tool for Baldur's Gate 3 for user Siegfre to upload his unlocked version on NexusMods.
The BG3 Toolkit Unlocked activates disabled features of the toolkit, along with a full-fledged level editor. This provides the opportunity to create custom areas or even entire campaigns within the game.
In anticipation of the BG3 Toolkit's release, Larian hinted that users would receive considerable freedom, but some aspects would be off-limits for editing. "We are a game development company, not a tools development company," stated Larian's CEO, Sven Vincke. He elaborated, explaining that the company lacks sufficient resources to officially support all of its development tools that are in the hands of end-users.
Modding Baldur's Gate 3 is also hampered by console support, as separate processes and approvals from Sony and Microsoft are likely required. The official tools are restricted in significantly modifying other aspects of BG3, including classes, items, balance, new NPCs, etc.
According to the readme file for BG3 Toolkit Unlocked, the mod "unlocks all disabled features and grants permissions for writing in the BG3 Toolkit, including level editing, saving edits, etc." Thus, it appears evident that the tools released by Larian are merely a slightly modified version of its internal Divinity Engine 4.0 editor, but with some locked features.
The level editor will greatly assist mod creators. It may even be possible to restore locations and other content that were cut by the game's developers.
