Diablo head Rod Fergusson on the game's film adaptation: 'It could work'

Against the backdrop of the success of the Fallout series, people are increasingly thinking about the film adaptation of other games. Jennifer Young from Windows Central asked Rod Fergusson, head of the Diablo franchise, if it is possible to make the game a successful series on Netflix or Amazon Prime. He answered affirmatively, and even with enthusiasm, however, Blizzard probably does not have any specific plans.

"Yes, I definitely think it could work. One of the things I really liked about Diablo as an IP is that it has very interconnected themes, because it's Heaven vs. Hell, the idea of Good vs. Evil. I wish I had more to tell you today. But for now, it's just an idea. You're asking me if I think it will work? Absolutely, yes. One of the things that interested me was the Cyberpunk anime [2077], which made me go back to Cyberpunk. Lately, there have been a lot of great shows," says Rod Fergusson.

Rumors of a Diablo adaptation surfaced as early as 2018, with a hint from the game's then-community manager, Brandy Camel, on YouTube. She said that Blizzard was developing multiple media projects around Diablo. This was before the announcement of Diablo 2: Resurrected, Diablo Immortal, and Diablo 4. Soon after, this was confirmed by Andy Cosby, the writer of the Hellboy reboot, but the tweet was later deleted.

"It seems that I can confirm that I am indeed in final negotiations to write and showcase a new Diablo animated series for Activision and Netflix. This is very exciting, and I hope everything works out."

These were the latest details about the adaptation. As can be seen now, the project did not start back then.
