Obsidian has revealed Avowed in a 30-minute gameplay demo

Obsidian Entertainment has released a 30-minute overview of its fantasy RPG Avowed, with 25 minutes dedicated to gameplay demonstration. The video details the gameplay process in the world of Eora, created by the developers of Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity, and The Outer Worlds.

Among the most interesting features are the ability to play in first or third person. They also showed conversations with several NPCs. Game director Carrie Patel explained how the environment will change when day turns to night in Avowed, as well as how NPCs will react to the player character.

Avowed will offer a set of skills that determine the style of combat and gameplay in general. They demonstrated two different ways to approach situations, with a fight or through stealth. Sometimes combat can anger important characters and block certain dialogue options and rewards, but a hidden attempt using a special player skill leads to the NPC allowing them to calmly leave with what they came for. The player character has several main characteristics:

  • Strength - increases damage in combat and carrying capacity
  • Constitution - increases health, resistance to poison and bleeding
  • Dexterity - increases attack and action speed
  • Perception - increases critical hit chance and maximum range
  • Intelligence - increases essence (mana equivalent) and elemental resistance
  • Resolve - increases endurance and Second Wind recharge speed, a mechanic that restores some health when an enemy blow could be fatal

There are four skill trees available: "Warrior," "Ranger," "Wizard," "Godlike," as well as a companion ability tree. The Godlike tree was not demonstrated, but it is likely focused on some unique character properties.

Although the gameplay seems slow, this is partially due to the demonstration and the immersion of the viewer into the atmosphere of Avowed. Compared to what the game creators showcased in January, the combat process has been improved, with equipment adding much to it. The player has a camp where they can upgrade their equipment, interact with group members, and rest.

Enemies have a "shout radius," meaning you can escape from one enemy if they are far enough from their friends. The blue-orange mushrooms turned out to be interesting enemies. These strange creatures group together, where some are capable of long-range attacks, while others use melee attacks.

After the event, Obsidian posted and then removed the game's release date - November 12, 2024. However, this date is nowhere to be found now: perhaps the company did not agree on the release day, or they are not ready.
