Death Stranding 2 presentation: new videos, $1700 jackets, and a release date Kojima won't say

During a 90-minute presentation at the Tokyo Game Show, Hideo Kojima unveiled nearly eight minutes of entirely new footage from the upcoming game Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.

Following the event, Kojima Productions uploaded English versions of the clips on Twitter. The gameplay looks astonishingly realistic. The opening scene takes players aboard a submarine, where Sam Porter Bridges (Norman Reedus) and Fragile (Léa Seydoux) head to the ship's bridge. The narrative of the video appears to be aligned with the beginning of the game.

It turns out that the ship is called DHV Magellan, and Fragile notes, “It’s always like this when DHV Magellan is in motion.” It's unclear if “like this” means everything is covered in slime and people have a bluish-grey complexion. Sam meets a character played by Mad Max director George Miller, Tarman, introduced by Fragile as a doctor and geophysicist who also operates the boat. Additionally, it appears that the "Magellan" is actually underground, not underwater. Sam encounters the charming animated puppet that everyone loved in the previous trailer. Mr. Puppet was once a human, named Dollman.

The next clip shows everyone back to normal colors, as Sam engages in a conversation between Tomorrow (Elle Fanning) and a new character, the pregnant Rainy, played by Japanese actress Shiori Kutsuna. Pregnant Rainy explains to Tomorrow where children come from, as Tomorrow hails from a different dimension where “no one gives birth; they simply remain in their mothers’ bellies.”

The third clip showcases the return of Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn in the role of Heartman, a man who suffers a heart attack and dies every 21 minutes, only to be revived by an automatic defibrillator. Now, Heartman sports heart-shaped glasses and an exoskeleton. He can now endure heart attacks while standing. “Thanks to this support block,” Heartman declares striking gravity-defying poses, “I can stand straight anytime and anywhere without a worry.”

The fourth clip demonstrates the photo mode of Death Stranding 2, where Sam takes pictures of Fragile, Rainy, and Tomorrow as they laugh, dance, and strike various poses throughout "Magellan."

The final clip features a musical number with Dollman dancing alongside copies of himself and Japanese pop musician Daichi Miura, set to the latter's new song "Horizon Dreamer."

Hideo Kojima stated that he already knows the game's release date, but it won’t be announced to the public yet:

“I didn’t mention the release date today, but it is already set, and I’m working on it, preparing for it... Since we are talking about 2025, the game will be released next year, and we will announce it at some point next year. But due to some unforeseen circumstances, we cannot disclose it today.”

Kojima also mentioned that several adaptations of Death Stranding are in the works, including a full-length feature film announced in December 2023.

“There are currently several adaptation projects for Death Stranding, but I’ve written a different story specifically for the film. However, I won’t have time to direct, so I won’t be.”

It seems the creator has decided to make a quick profit. Kojima Productions announced a collaboration with the clothing brand Acronym to sell jackets inspired by Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. The black-and-orange attire looks stylish but costs €1540 (over $1700). However, there's no need to worry about the price — the limited batch of jackets has already sold out.

Death Stranding 2 was announced back in December 2022 at The Game Awards, where its trailer was shown. The video confirmed the return of Norman Reedus and Léa Seydoux, along with other actors.
