Microsoft asks developers why they're ignoring Xbox: "We can learn!"

Microsoft aims to gather feedback from game developers, including those using competitor products, as part of its expanded Xbox Research program.

For the survey, Microsoft plans to involve all employees (not just technical specialists) and request their input on tools, performance settings, debugging utilities, and many other aspects of game development.

“We want to hear from everyone who works on games or supports game studios because if we can make your life easier, it will lead to better games,” says Xbox's chief user researcher, Deborah Henderson.

Additionally, Microsoft intends to focus on information from game studios that do not release games on Xbox.

“If you’re not using Xbox, we’d like to know why?” Henderson states. “And frankly, if you’re using our competitors’ products, you probably have a great perspective from which we can learn!”

The expanded research program from Microsoft is being launched against the backdrop of notable delays in releases from third-party developers on Xbox: for example, Baldur's Gate 3 launched on Xbox several months after its PS5 debut due to technical issues with the Xbox Series S; meanwhile, Capcom announced last month that two new fighting game collections (Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics and Capcom Fighting Collection 2) will only be available on Xbox in 2025 after “technical discussions” with Microsoft.

Black Myth: Wukong will also appear on Xbox after its release on PS5, as developers are currently “optimizing the version for Xbox Series X|S to meet quality standards.” Last month, the developers of Enotria: The Last Song publicly announced an “indefinite delay” for the Xbox version after encountering Microsoft's review process (the studio's statement drew the attention of Xbox chief Phil Spencer, who reached out to the team to help resolve the situation).
