Five years have passed since the last main installment of Borderlands, leading to the question of when the next one will arrive. Randy Pitchford, chairman of Gearbox, states that fans won’t have to wait long.
“I couldn’t hide the fact that we are working on many things, and that we are working on big things. I’m confident our fans will be very, very happy with the next game project when we’re ready to announce it. I’ll tell you that we won’t make people wait long before we reveal it.”
Pitchford hints that an announcement for the next Borderlands title could come “by the end of the year, possibly even sooner.” Regarding the game, he adds:
“I have the biggest and best team that has ever worked on what we know our fans want from us, so I am very, very excited. I can’t wait to talk about it!”
The last main title in the series was Borderlands 3, released in 2019, but in 2022, New Tales from the Borderlands and the role-playing game Tiny Tina's Wonderlands were released. The latter turned out to be a hit, and Pitchford suggests that we will likely see more from the D&D-inspired sub-universe.
“In the first Wonderlands game, we achieved a greater result than in the first Borderlands game, so we can expand on this. I love fantasy. That’s why we created the original DLC Dragon Keep for Borderlands 2, because I love fantasy so much. Many of us at Gearbox love fantasy, and it gives us the opportunity to work with it in the context of Borderlands; I think our fans should expect more.”
