The Ukrainian and international media report that Ukraine has conducted its first strike on Russian territory using American ATACMS missiles. Additionally, more strikes are expected to follow.
The editor-in-chief of the website Censor.NET, Yuriy Butusov, citing his own sources, states that on November 19, an arsenal in the Bryansk region of Russia was attacked specifically with the ATACMS missiles provided by the U.S. This marks the first use of American missiles against a military target in Russia. Here’s what the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reports about it (without naming the weapon):
“In the night of November 19, 2024, the Ukrainian Armed Forces, in coordination with other components of the Defense Forces, inflicted fire damage on the arsenal of the 1046 Material and Technical Supply Center near the town of Karachev in the Bryansk region of Russia. By 02:30 this morning, 12 secondary explosions and detonations were recorded in the target area. The targeting of ammunition depots for the Russian occupiers' army, with the aim of ending Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine, will continue.”
Currently, the General Staff has not commented on the strike using ATACMS.
The journalist asserts that the initiation of long-range strikes on Russia will not change the course of the war but will impose significant losses on the enemy, complicate logistics, and force air defense forces to extend their coverage over potential strike distances.
“And today, another 'brown line' of the Kremlin has been crossed. Now the whole world will watch to see if Putin will take any action,” notes Butusov.
The publication RBK-Ukraine corroborates this information, referring to an informed source within the Defense Forces. Moreover, the site provides a quote from the source:
“Indeed, ATACMS were used for the first time to strike Russian territory. The strike was made against a target in the Bryansk region, and it was successfully hit.”
The website Global Defense Corp adds that initial ATACMS attacks on Russia may indeed occur in the coming days, again citing insiders. The publication explicitly states that “Ukraine aims to demolish the Kerch Bridge after the U.S. approved the use of ATACMS for strikes inside Russia.”
“Ukrainian Pravda” reports that on November 19, Vladimir Putin approved a new Russian nuclear doctrine. It particularly allows for the use of nuclear weapons in response to “aggression” from a non-nuclear state receiving support from nuclear powers and “the launch of ballistic missiles.” Putin’s spokesperson Peskov stated that “the use of Western non-nuclear missiles by Ukraine against Russia under this new doctrine could lead to a nuclear response.”
