Tim Lamb, the lead creative producer of Starfield, discussed the game's development plans, player feedback, and the upcoming expansion, Shattered Space.
He shared this information during a conversation with TheGamer at Gamescom 2024.
Starfield, the new space RPG from Bethesda, has received mixed reactions from players in its first year. While the game didn't replicate the massive success of Skyrim or Fallout 4, the developers consider it a successful project with ambitious plans ahead.
Lamb acknowledges that the team is closely monitoring community feedback.
“We listen to player opinions. There is value in their critiques. However, we are our own harshest critics. We analyze community comments, consider our own interests, and plan for further development,” Lamb stated.
The first major step in the game's development will be the Shattered Space expansion, set to be released on September 30. According to Lamb, it will significantly differ from the main game.
“It's a pendulum shift. Instead of an enormous galaxy filled with optimistic exploration across different worlds, we’re offering a more contained, focused, and mysterious space,” the developer explained.
Bethesda has ambitious plans for the future of Starfield. When asked by the interviewer about the possibility of turning the game into a long-term project similar to Skyrim, Lamb responded positively:
“I hope so. We always plan to support our games for a long time. We constantly have several ideas at various stages of development,” he shared.
The developers are also paying attention to the trend of a return to hardcore RPGs, particularly following the success of Baldur's Gate 3. However, Lamb emphasizes the importance of balance:
“We want our games to be easy to understand. In Starfield, there are many systems to delve into, but we don’t require players to immerse themselves in every single one,” he noted.
Additionally, Lamb highlighted the significance of mods for Starfield.
“If people are enjoying themselves, even if it's not through simply playing the game but by creating mods—please, keep it up. It makes me smile,” the developer admitted.
