Both AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processors were damaged while using the same MSI motherboard. There are suspicions regarding user error, but the coincidence is concerning.
A Reddit user who reported the first incident was joined by an owner of a Ryzen 7 9800X3D from the Quasarrzone forums. The common factor in both cases is the MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk WiFi motherboard. The manufacturer released a brief statement today:
“We recently received a report from a user regarding the damage to the AMD Ryzen™ 7 9800X3D processor on the MSI MAG X870 TOMAHAWK WIFI motherboard. At MSI, we are fully committed to the quality of our products and have initiated an investigation into this incident. Additionally, we are closely collaborating with AMD and maintaining communication with GamersNexus, which is independently investigating this matter. We will continue to provide updates as the investigation progresses.”
Earlier, MSI informed Tom's Hardware that it could only replicate the issue when the processor was incorrectly seated in the socket. The company is still looking for other ways to reproduce the problem.
From user-uploaded photos, it can also be concluded that the likely cause of the processor failures was improper installation. This may have resulted in a short circuit. AMD Ryzen processors utilize a square form factor, making it easy to install the chip in the wrong orientation. This possibility is acknowledged by the first user who reported the issue.
In all photos of the affected boards, the plastic frame around the socket appears to be damaged. The protruding plastic may have hindered users from properly installing the chip. It remains unclear whether user actions led to the defect, or if the sockets arrived in that condition.
