Sales of Copilot+ PC laptops started on June 18. Some specialized websites have already conducted detailed tests of the ASUS Vivobook S 15 laptop with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite processor "on board." VideoCardz has summarized these tests - the results are disappointing for gamers.
Currently, Qualcomm is the only certified supplier of Copilot+ PCs. Laptops with Snapdragon X chips were released with new specialized Microsoft software. The Snapdragon X Elite processor is made on a 4nm process and has 12 Qualcomm Oryon CPU cores with a frequency of up to 3.4 GHz and power consumption of 45W (PL2), 30W (PL1). The chip is equipped with integrated Adreno X1 graphics and a 45 TOPS neural processor (NPU).
Several detailed tests have been conducted so far, and there are also reviews from early users confirming the overall conclusion. In short, the Snapdragon X series offers very good processor performance along with long battery life, even despite the emulation of x64-x86 programs. The main issue is the performance of the integrated Adreno X1 graphics card, which falls short of expectations.
In addition to the assumed emulation errors on ARM (some games do not even start), in some cases, it is impossible to change the resolution according to the screen's characteristics. Games show frame rates below expectations, even with scaling. In fact, the Snapdragon X is not intended for gamers; it is a processor for portable computers with average integrated graphics capabilities.
The ASUS Vivobook S 15 supports Copilot+ features such as Cocreator, live subtitles, audio and video effects. Microsoft has postponed the release of the controversial Recall feature. Some technologies, such as Automatic Super Resolution, can currently only be used with Qualcomm hardware.
Currently, Copilot+ PCs do not use the NPU to assist with AI functions - instead, the laptop connects to an online service, which is now accessible through the dedicated Copilot key. However, in the future, the functions will receive further development from Microsoft.
The biggest expectation from future generations of Snapdragon X processors is the improvement of the integrated graphics performance. As Notebookcheck notes, "3D performance is disappointing." It is also evident that software improvements are needed to enhance the performance of programs and games with Arm chips.
