Microsoft intends to discontinue support for the Mail, Calendar, and People apps in the Windows operating system by the end of this year. Over the past few months, the company has been transitioning users of these applications to the new version of Outlook for Windows, and now it has set a deadline for discontinuing support for Mail, Calendar, and People — December 31.
Microsoft warns that after support ends for these applications, users who have not switched to the new Outlook app "will be unable to send and receive emails using Windows Mail and Calendar."
For several years, Microsoft has been gradually rolling out the new Outlook for Windows, which officially became available in August. This new web-based Outlook is designed to eventually replace the full desktop version of Outlook. Microsoft plans to notify corporate clients 12 months ahead of the transition process from the desktop version of Outlook.
Current installations of the classic Outlook via perpetual and subscription licenses will be supported at least until 2029, so the full transition of all Outlook users to the new app will take some time. Microsoft will start with the Mail, Calendar, and People apps in Windows this year and will then move to a stage where users can opt out of Outlook in Windows.
