Baidu, often referred to as the "Chinese equivalent of Google," unveiled its own pair of AI-powered smart glasses at its annual conference in Shanghai. The device will utilize the company's own generative AI technology called ERNIE. These smart glasses are designed to serve as a "personal assistant."
Users will be able to interact with the device using voice commands, asking questions about their surroundings. The glasses can also play music and even track calorie consumption. Equipped with cameras, users can request to take photos or record videos.
Baidu's smart glasses are expected to hit the market next year. They could serve as an alternative to devices from Meta and Snap for Chinese consumers. A few years ago, Meta partnered with Ray-Ban to release smart glasses that can live stream and take photos hands-free. The latest model from Meta is equipped with a generative AI assistant that users can interact with. However, the company's device is not officially sold in China due to its servers being blocked in the country. Baidu has yet to announce the pricing for its smart glasses, while Meta sells its device for $299.
The Baidu World conference placed significant emphasis on the company's AI developments, as it takes steps to enhance the competitiveness of ERNIE. Baidu also showcased a new AI-based image generator called iRAG, which has fewer "hallucinations" compared to its predecessor, as well as a tool that enables app creation even without programming knowledge.
