A large smartphone manufacturing company has decided to halt the production of its line of foldable devices. This is indicated by reports from China.

Ma Guanyu from 163.com reported that the market for foldable smartphones in China this year grew by 13.6%, which was below expectations, and at least one company believes that maintaining profitability has become too challenging under these conditions. The source does not specify which company is canceling its plans to release foldable smartphones in 2025. However, Oppo and vivo are mentioned as the two companies that have had the longest period since releasing their last such device.

Xiaomi recently launched its foldable Mix Flip on the international market after announcing it alongside the Mix Fold 4 in July. However, according to the report, the production of Mix Flip fell short of the planned 500,000 units, stopping at 460,000, and sales of Mix Fold 4 did not even reach 100,000 units.

Oppo has not released a new foldable device for over a year — the Find N3 was released back in October 2023. As for vivo, the company has not launched a successor to the X Flip, which debuted in early 2023. However, it announced two horizontal foldable smartphones — the X Fold3 and Fold3 Pro, with the Pro being its first foldable device in the international market.

Brands Transsion, Tecno, and Infinix recently unveiled their new products: Tecno Phantom V Fold2, V Flip2, and Infinix Zero Flip. Therefore, it is unlikely that they will make such radical decisions soon after their official premieres.

According to IDC, 2.23 million foldable devices were shipped in China in the third quarter of 2024, representing a 13.6% increase compared to the same period last year. This is the lowest figure in the past two years.
