Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic Games, announced the dawn of a new era in the gaming industry. During his speech at the Unreal Fest in Seattle, he discussed significant changes impacting the success of gaming projects.

According to Sweeney, Fortnite has reached record popularity levels. The number of active users hit 110 million during the last holiday season. He indicated that this achievement comes amidst a "generational shift" in the gaming industry.

“One manifestation of [these changes] that we are currently observing is that many games are being released with high budgets, but they are selling significantly worse than expected,” Sweeney stated. “Meanwhile, other games are showing incredibly strong results. We see a real trend where players are drawn to truly expansive projects where they can play with a large number of their friends.”

Sweeney emphasized the importance of the social aspect in modern games. He noted that the value of a game increases in proportion to the number of friends with whom players can interact. This pertains not only to cooperative gameplay but also to voice communication, virtual concert viewing, and other online activities.

The head of Epic Games touched upon the concept of the metaverse, pointing out that people interpret it in various ways. Some associate it with projects in virtual and augmented reality, while others apply the term to Fortnite.

Sweeney believes that the future of the gaming industry lies in projects that are continuously evolving and updating. He cited Fortnite as an example, where global brands, musicians, and franchises create a unique entertainment experience that is constantly changing.
