Six-fingered gloves serve as a reference to the outcomes of neural networks, which frequently add extra fingers to people's images in their creations.
It turns out that the initiative originated from the Finnish startup Saidot, which expressed its concerns about the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence in this manner.
“No one can fully predict its consequences and new risks,” says Saidot co-founder Vera Siivonen.
As part of the campaign, six-fingered gloves were mailed to leaders of prominent companies in the artificial intelligence sector, including Mark Zuckerberg from Meta and Sam Altman from OpenAI. The "creepy" package was also received by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who is being called upon to ensure effective regulation for the industry.
Interestingly, Scarlett Johansson also received a set, having made headlines after OpenAI launched the voice mode of ChatGPT, which oddly resembled the actress's voice.
At the same time, Saidot acknowledged the initiatives of Altman and Zuckerberg aimed at "regulating AI"— the former is hesitant to release more powerful models, while the latter has been praised for supporting open-source models. However, both have been urged to align artificial intelligence with human values and source training data from reliable channels.
The six-fingered gloves sent to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, EU Commissioner for Technical Matters Hennie Virkkunen, and AI researcher Rishi Bommasani hinted at the need for oversight in copyright enforcement and curtailing the spread of misinformation.
Recall that in March of last year, Elon Musk and over 1,000 experts signed an open letter about the dangers of advanced AI — the document specifically called for a moratorium on the development of the technology and for stricter regulations.
