Tesla is expanding its team to develop the humanoid robot Optimus.
Over the past year, the company has hired dozens of employees to train the robot using motion capture suits, reports Business Insider.
The role of "data collection operator" involves performing tasks while wearing a special suit and virtual reality goggles for more than seven hours a day. Candidates must be between 170 and 180 centimeters tall, which matches the size of the Optimus robot. Elon Musk previously stated that Optimus would be approximately 173 centimeters tall.
Workers will collect data, analyze it, and write daily reports. Tesla offers a full-time position with pay ranging from $25.25 to $48 per hour. The company is hiring staff for various shifts, including night shifts.
Animesh Garg, a senior researcher at Nvidia Research and a robotics professor at Georgia Tech, comments:
“The job involves data collection through task performance in motion capture suits, which are recorded for further analysis, as well as direct operation of the humanoid robot.”
Last year, Tesla released a video showing an operator in a motion capture suit with haptic gloves lifting objects, while a virtual version of the Optimus robot mirrored these movements.

According to Garg, training Optimus to work in Tesla factories may require collecting hundreds of thousands to millions of hours of data.
“This could cost half a billion dollars, and even then, success is not guaranteed,” he adds.
Using motion capture suits for robot training is not new, but Tesla is one of the first companies to apply this practice on such a scale to perform a wide range of general tasks.
