ChatGPT has finally gained a fully functional voice, although — with some limitations.
OpenAI has announced the launch of an enhanced voice mode for audio chats with ChatGPT. Currently, it is available in select countries (not yet in the EU) and only to subscribers of Plus, Team, or Enterprise plans, starting at $20/month.
The enhanced voice mode offers 9 voice options and improved responsiveness — for instance, if you "interrupt" the chatbot, it will pause the conversation to listen to you. As noted by CNBC, there are also certain limitations — the response speed may decrease with prolonged use.
How to use ChatGPT's enhanced voice mode?
- First, ensure that the latest version of the app is installed on your phone.
- Open the ChatGPT app, where you will see an update message, and tap "Continue."
- Create a new chat, and next to the text box and microphone icon, you will see a sound wave icon — tap it and make sure the sound on your device is turned on.
- After a few seconds, you will hear a light "tap" sound, and the circle in the center of the screen will transform into a smooth blue-white animation.
- Start speaking and receive a voice response from ChatGPT.
- In the settings, you can choose the voice and language (including some accents).
OpenAI first announced the voice capabilities of ChatGPT back in May; however, due to similarities between the voice "Sky" and that of actress Scarlett Johansson, the startup faced legal claims, prompting a pause in the rollout of this mode.
Google is also planning to release a voice function for Gemini, while Meta has announced that users of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp will be able to converse with AI using voices of celebrities.
