The lead designer of Skyrim and former senior system designer of Starfield, Bruce Nesmith, believes that Bethesda should not switch to a new game engine.

In an interview with VideoGamer, Nesmith explains why Bethesda's proprietary Creation Engine is still in use despite its age. He asserts that the engine is not an end in itself; it should be optimal for the games the company creates.

“We argue about the game engine, let's talk about the game. The game engine is not the essence; the game engine serves the game itself. We could point to a hundred unworthy games that used Unreal. Is that the fault of Unreal? No, Unreal is not to blame.”

The Creation Engine has long been used to develop some of the best role-playing games of all time, and it is also evolving—what began as an offshoot of the now-defunct Gamebryo has gradually transformed into the Creation Engine.

“This engine has been constantly modified, updated, and improved to create exactly the types of games that Bethesda develops: The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Starfield.”

This is why replacing the engine does not seem like the best solution. It would also take many years to adapt to another. Nesmith notes that there is significant risk for Bethesda in this regard. Gamers criticize the studio's engine for many outdated aspects, including "wooden" animations and a plethora of glitches in games. On the other hand, Unreal Engine is said to not be particularly suitable for creating RPGs. More clarity on this will come from the upcoming games of another experienced developer, the Polish CD Projekt Red, which replaced its own REDengine with Unreal.
