The legendary sports car Nissan GT-R is set to receive an electric version. Likely, the Electric GT-R will be the first Nissan vehicle to utilize solid-state batteries. As this new technology develops, the company hinted that solid-state batteries could provide the electric GT-R with even greater efficiency.
While announcing the concept of the electric GT-R, Nissan stated that the electric sports car is a "hyper electric vehicle that changes the game." Such claims come from the intention to equip the vehicle with electric motors boasting over 1000 kW (more than 1300 horsepower). By comparison, the most powerful Tesla Cybertruck, the Cyberbeast, produces up to 845 hp (621 kW).
All this power is supported by a new electric driveline featuring completely solid-state batteries. Nissan's Vice President of Global Product Planning, Ivan Espinosa, clarified that such batteries make sense in sports cars, "because you can pack a significant amount of energy into half the space."
In April, Nissan showcased a pilot line of entirely solid-state batteries for electric vehicles, describing this technology as revolutionary. This development boasts approximately double the energy density compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries. The new technology could enhance power output and reduce charging times.
Espinosa hinted that the upcoming electric GT-R would be the perfect electric vehicle to debut the new solid-state batteries.
He further remarked:
“Initially, the price may be high.”
However, he expects that costs will decrease as technologies advance. Nissan plans to utilize fully solid-state batteries across a broad range of vehicles, including pickups.
Although Nissan has yet to officially announce the electric sports car, the concept features a blurred "GT-R" logo. It includes the e-4ORCE all-wheel-drive technology, which provides enhanced control and handling on tracks and winding roads.
Nissan designed the concept's exterior in collaboration with its racing team NISMO, aiming for maximum aerodynamics. Additional features, such as a dual-tier front lip and rear diffuser, have been implemented for improved efficiency.
