The best-selling Hyundai electric car is getting an update. The updated IONIQ 5 for 2025 will be the first car to be released at Hyundai's new plant in Georgia, USA.
IONIQ 5 was introduced in February 2021 as Hyundai's first dedicated electric car built on the E-GMP platform. Despite competitors reporting a "slower-than-expected" demand for electric cars, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 maintained its sales momentum in 2024. In fact, in the first 5 months of 2024, sales of this model increased by 43% compared to the same period the previous year.
Seizing the moment, Hyundai plans to release the updated IONIQ 5 later this year. The company is currently completing construction of the new plant, training staff, and production will begin in October. Hyundai has already announced some new features to expect from the 2025 IONIQ 5 lineup.
The new Hyundai IONIQ 5 will be 20 mm longer, will receive a rear windshield wiper, but significant design changes are not expected. The most interesting innovations will relate to the internal electrical components of the car. For example, the 77.4 kWh battery is being replaced with an 84 kWh battery. This increased the range from 458 km to 485 km. Fast charging allows the battery to be restored from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes.
Among the mechanical changes mentioned are improved sound and vibration absorption, an updated steering wheel with LEDs and hand tracking function, the addition of a USB-C port and physical buttons for some commonly used car functions. A button has been added in the trunk to fold down the rear seats, making it easier to load large items into the car from the back. Additionally, the Ioniq 5 gains access to Hyundai Connected Car Navigation Cockpit software with wireless updates.
