Garmin has released an updated version of its satellite communicator, the inReach Messenger — featuring additional functionalities and nearly double the standard price.
The Garmin inReach Messenger Plus not only supports sending text messages beyond cellular coverage but also allows users to send photos and voice messages via satellite (which can be advantageous in emergencies when it's crucial to relay important information regarding equipment or injuries to rescue teams).
The device also enables sharing location updates or downloading weather forecasts. The Garmin inReach Messenger Plus includes a dedicated SOS button that connects users directly to Garmin's 24/7 emergency coordination center.
Like its predecessor, this device has an IPX7 rating (meaning it can withstand being submerged in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes). It weighs 117 grams, and the display size is — 1.08 inches (with a resolution of 160 x 68).
In terms of battery life, the device offers up to 600 hours on a single charge, whether sending text messages or updating location every 10 minutes, or sending 250 photos/audio messages.
For comparison: the original Messenger is priced at $300, whereas the Plus version costs $500, excluding subscription fees. Current plans range from $11.95 to $49.95 per month, offering enhanced features for professionals and user groups.
