Actor Shawn Fonteno, who portrayed one of the main characters in GTA 5, Franklin Clinton, shared during a stream with blogger Kai Senat the unusual circumstances surrounding the game's development.
Before working with Rockstar Games, the actor had legal troubles and had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The studio offered him a job at a time when he faced a lengthy prison sentence.
“I told them, ‘I don't want to deal with this crap, get all this [motion capture equipment] off me.’ Then they had me sit down and talk, and the director simply said, ‘Trust me.’ They concealed the fact that it was Grand Theft Auto 5 and instead told us we were working on some game called Paradise. It was all due to their secrecy. We had no idea it was GTA 5 until a whole year had passed,” the actor recalled.
To keep the secret, developers even "altered" the main character's name—rather than Franklin, the actor played the part of "DaShawn."
