It seems that Huawei and its affiliate Honor are seriously venturing into the realm of foldable smartphones. The former has created the triple smartphone Mate XT, while Honor is patenting a four-segment design.
Many individual segments of a smartphone require not only a robust and flexible display but also intricate hinge constructions. Honor's new patent outlines a design consisting of four equal segments that do not fold like an accordion. It’s hard to visualize how this could work, but it is claimed that the smartphone, or possibly another device, can fold in multiple directions simultaneously.
This represents a fundamentally new design. As is known, the Huawei Mate XT has just one large screen that bends in both directions. This allows the smartphone to fold like an accordion — but only in one direction. The new patent showcases hinges that are situated centrally and can bend in both directions, which is expected to affect the complexity of their construction and durability.
It remains unclear whether Honor truly plans to produce a smartphone — a patent doesn't automatically imply that. However, the fact that they are developing it indicates a keen interest in this segment, and rumors suggest that Honor is planning its own triple smartphone. This is the first instance where the manufacturer has hinted at a greater number of segments.
Regarding a more tangible Honor smartphone, resembling the Huawei Mate XT, unofficial sources claim it will be even slimmer—around 10 mm compared to the 12.88 mm thickness of the Mate XT. This phone is spoken of as a genuine development, and the first images are expected soon.
