Someone needs to inform those 34 fortunate players that they have made history in gaming.
Larian Studios, the developer behind Baldur's Gate 3, has released an infographic to celebrate the game's first anniversary. It reveals statistics about the most popular endings. Specifically, 3.3 million players defeated the mindflayer, while 1.8 million betrayed the Emperor, seizing the power of the mind. Over 330,000 players convinced Orpheus to continue his existence as an illithid.
However, the most intriguing information was about an incredibly rare ending. According to Larian, only 34 players "chose to end their game with a suicide." This scenario involves the player controlling the avatar Lae'zel— a githyanki warrior as the main character. In this case, Vlaakith, the goddess-queen of the githyanki, rejects Lae'zel's ambition for Ascension.
For githyanki, Ascension means being consumed by Vlaakith. Despite the inherent risks, many githyanki aspire to achieve this state. Larian suggests that after Vlaakith's rejection, Lae'zel might have chosen not to continue living.
This rarity can be attributed to the fact that Lae'zel is the least popular character among players who select predefined heroes. Furthermore, reaching this ending requires a complex narrative journey that demands specific choices throughout the game.
Interestingly, information about this ending is hard to verify due to its rarity. The only mention found is in the game's data on Baldur's Gate 3 wiki, which states: “We defeated the mindflayer, but Vlaakith rejected Lae'zel's ambition for Ascension as she did not kill Orpheus.”
