A 23-year-old Australian, Matilda Campbell, fell into a rock crevice while trying to retrieve her iPhone and ended up stuck upside down. She couldn't escape on her own, so she remained in that position for seven hours until rescuers arrived.
The young woman was photographing the scenery in the Hunter Valley in New South Wales when she accidentally dropped her expensive smartphone into the crevice. She attempted to retrieve it, but slipped and fell, becoming trapped between two boulders upside down.
Although news reports do not mention the iPhone, the website MacRumors investigated Matilda's social media and found that she was indeed an owner of the Apple smartphone.
Friends of the girl, who initially tried to free her, eventually called for help. Rescuers had to remove seven boulders weighing between 80 and 500 kilograms, and they also constructed a wooden frame in case any rocks cracked and fell.
Campbell was trapped for about seven hours, and after the fall, she sustained scratches, bruises, and a fractured vertebra.
The iPhone could not be retrieved.
“Thank you for the rescue, guys... but I’m really sad about my phone,” Campbell said in a message to the rescuers (via ABC Newcastle).
