Durov: Apple demands to ban some channels in Telegram for users with Ukrainian SIM cards

Telegram founder Pavel Durov revealed that Apple has requested the blocking of certain Telegram channels for Ukrainian users. Although the platform community typically opposes such blockages, companies still have to listen to such requests in order for the application to remain available in the App Store.

Pavel Durov recalled that back in February 2022, he proposed to restrict Telegram channels in Russia and Ukraine because they were being used for military propaganda. However, users strongly opposed such restrictions. At the same time, the platform blocks accounts and bots that collect coordinates for targeted strikes or publish personal information with calls for violence.

“As for general news/propaganda channels, we receive official letters from Apple stating that certain changes here are inevitable, at least for users who access Telegram on an iPhone with Ukrainian SIM cards,” Durov stated.

He added that the Telegram administration is interested in providing users with "access to information and opinions without censorship, so they can make their own decisions."

“However, this is not always up to us,” the Telegram founder says.

Pavel Durov did not specify which channels and how many channels Apple is demanding to block for users with Ukrainian SIM cards.
