Now Disney knows that revenge is a dish best served with peanuts.
A former Disney World employee, Michael Shoer, is accused of intentionally altering allergy information on restaurant menus. Specifically, he allegedly marked dishes containing peanuts as safe for people with allergies to that ingredient.
Taking advantage of passwords that remained active after his dismissal, Shoer accessed a third-party menu creation application. In addition to changing the allergen data, he inserted profanity, altered prices, and changed fonts to Wingdings. It was these bizarre fonts that caught the attention of employees regarding the issue.
As a result of Shoer's actions, all menus in the database became unusable, and the application for creating them was non-functional for one to two weeks until the problem was resolved. Despite Disney changing passwords, Shoer hacked several FTP servers of the application developer to modify allergen information again. He also replaced QR codes, which were supposed to direct users to the menus, with links calling for a boycott of Israel. Additionally, Shoer attempted to hack Disney employee accounts approximately 8,000 times.
According to Disney, the altered menus were discovered before they were sent to the restaurants.
