The plaintiffs believe they have fallen victim to deception by Ubisoft.
In March, Ubisoft shut down the game The Crew, rendering all its content, including single-player mode, inaccessible to players. In response to the shutdown, YouTuber Ross Scott, known as Accursed Farms, sought to file a class-action lawsuit against the company and initiated a campaign called “Stop Killing Games”This campaign aims to gather a million signatures to submit a petition to the European Union. Over 379,000 signatures have been collected in four months.. Now, two players from California are suing the developer for shutting down the game.
“Imagine you bought a pinball machine, and years later you walk into your room to play, only to find that all the pedals are gone, the balls and bumpers are missing, and the monitor that proudly displayed your unbeatable score has been removed,” the lawsuit states. “Even though you paid full price for this game, you never knew that the developer could one day come and, without your control, leave you with only a shell of what you paid for.”
The lawsuit also claims that Ubisoft failed to provide the basic courtesy of leaving the single-player version of the game intact, and thousands of customers have been left without any access to the game. According to the plaintiffs, the developer deceived consumers by selling them what appeared to be a complete game on discs, when in reality they were only given temporary access to content on its servers.
The plaintiffs' demands include a declaration that Ubisoft is violating regulations and “compensatory, statutory, and punitive damages in amounts to be determined by the Court or jury.”
