The toy manufacturer Mattel expressed deep regret over a typo on the packaging of dolls inspired by the upcoming movie "Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz," which mistakenly included a pornographic website address.
Recently, the company released singing dolls ahead of the film featuring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in lead roles. Fans noticed the glaring error on the boxes and shared photos on social media, revealing the address wicked.com instead of the film's official site wickedmovie.com.
Mattel officially apologized for the "unfortunate mistake" and informed parents that the website printed on the boxes "is not suitable for children." The company is taking steps to rectify the issue. Mattel indicated that the dolls were primarily sold in the United States.
However, the BBC found online instructions on Mattel's site for both dolls, which also listed the incorrect address. The issue has already attracted attention among unsuspecting customers, who are voicing their concerns on social media:
"I purchased the singing doll of Elphaba, and upon checking the website printed on the back of [the box] Mattel, right above the barcode, it is indicated as… an adult website 18+."
The film "Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz" is set to hit theaters after two decades of the musical's existence on stage. The story of the film takes place in the Land of Oz before the arrival of Dorothy Gale from Kansas and covers the first act of the musical. British actress Cynthia Erivo plays Elphaba, a young woman facing challenges due to her green skin, who has not yet discovered her powers. In the future, she is destined to become the Wicked Witch of the West.
Elphaba befriends her classmate Glinda, portrayed by singer Ariana Grande, who will eventually become the Good Witch of the North. The film is slated to premiere on November 21.
