Sony has wrapped up its State of Play presentation with the announcement of a new game from Sucker Punch studio — Ghost of Yotei. This installment continues the beloved Ghost series, set in medieval Japan.
In a brief teaser trailer, the developers introduced a new protagonist named Atsu. She is skilled with both a traditional samurai sword and a shamisen, a Japanese stringed instrument.
Ghost of Yotei will take players to the island of Hokkaido, at the foot of Mount Yotei. Atsu will journey through untamed lands, accompanied by a mysterious wolf companion. The game is set in the year 1603 — at the beginning of the Edo period in Japanese history.
Andrew Goldfarb, communications manager at Sucker Punch, discussed the new features of the game:
“We have created vast panoramic landscapes, added a new starry sky with auroras, and enhanced the realism of grass and plants moving in the wind.”
According to the developers, Ghost of Yotei will be the studio's first project developed exclusively for PlayStation 5. This will allow them to fully leverage the console's technical capabilities to create stunning visuals.
Sucker Punch promises to retain the atmospheric contemplative moments that fans loved in the previous game — Ghost of Tsushima. Meanwhile, the team is focused on implementing new gameplay mechanics and weapon varieties.
Sony has yet to announce a specific release date for Ghost of Yotei, but it is tentatively scheduled for 2025.
