Dragon Age: The Veilguard concludes the narrative that began at the end of Dragon Age: Inquisition, when players discovered who Solas is. Developers state that this has always been part of their plans.

The main focus of the storyline in Dragon Age 4 has remained consistent for BioWare over the past decade. The game Dragon Age: The Veilguard is closely tied to the character of Solas, a former companion from the previous Dragon Age, who evolved into a world-threatening figure in the Trespasser expansion.

“The world exists because of Solas. He shaped it through his character. In my opinion, that’s what makes Dragon Age so fascinating. Everything may be linked to a character who believed, to some extent, that he was doing the right thing,” says game director John Epler in an interview with Edge magazine.

Solas is so crucial to the future of Thedas that the next Dragon Age game was always intended to be his story: “We set this up at the end of Trespasser. There was never a world in which we were going to say, 'Now let’s move on to something completely different.' We wanted to fulfill that promise.”

There’s only one element that was more important for The Veilguard: the group of companions, which inspired the name change from Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. However, this time players will not have direct control over companions in the game—BioWare aims to simplify the experience for players.
