The Google Pixel 9 smartphones feature not only a revamped design and upgraded hardware but also enhanced camera functionalities. However, the priciest model remains somewhat limited.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold, priced at $1800, will not include the camera mode available on the more affordable Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL. Owners of the Fold variant will miss out on some enticing features of Video Boost, which could significantly influence the decision against purchasing the new foldable phone.
Google's Video Boost technology was first introduced with the launch of the Pixel 8 Pro. Most of its enhancements rely on cloud processing through Google Photos. The same holds true for the Pixel 9 series, where Google Photos plays a crucial role.
Of course, not all of the "magic" happens in the cloud. There are also specific hardware requirements for the smartphone. A comparison of the cameras shows that the Pixel 9 Pro Fold falls short compared to other devices in the lineup. The Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro boast a 50 MP main camera with Octa PD and a 48 MP ultra-wide camera with Quad PD.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold has decent cameras, including a 48 MP main camera with Quad PD, a 10.5 MP ultra-wide camera, and a Dual PD telephoto lens. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold will have access to some Video Boost features like HDR+ and Night Sight. However, it won't be able to upscale video resolution from 4K to 8K or utilize the Super Res Zoom Video feature (20x lossless zoom).
If you’re in the market for a foldable smartphone with good cameras, the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold remains a reasonable option. However, for those seeking the full suite of camera capabilities, the Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL seem more optimal choices.
