The Steam Hardware and Software Survey has revealed an intriguing trend among gamers in 2024. Even with the availability of high resolutions, the majority of platform users still prefer 1080p for gaming.
The survey results indicate that the typical Steam user operates on Windows 10, possesses 16 GB of RAM, has an RTX 3060 graphics card, and uses a monitor with a resolution of 1080p. This configuration has proven to be the most popular among gamers.
In comparison to other resolutions, 1080p leads with 57.28% of users opting for it. Following that is 1440p, chosen by 20% of users, while only 3.65% of Steam players utilize 4K.
The popularity of 1080p can be attributed to several factors. First, this resolution strikes a perfect balance between image quality and performance, especially on 24-inch screens. Second, it is particularly well-suited for mid-range graphics cards like the RTX 3060, allowing for high frame rates in most modern games.
Popular games on Steam also play a crucial role in resolution selection. Esports titles like CS2 and Dota 2 do not require ultra-high resolutions for an enjoyable experience. Conversely, shooter players often opt for lower resolutions to achieve higher frame rates, which is essential for gameplay. Many gamers believe that stable 60 frames per second at 1080p provides a superior gaming experience compared to 30 frames at 4K.
