Saudi Arabia has set itself an ambitious goal — to transport people across its desert metropolis using electric boats with underwater wings. To achieve this objective, the country has already acquired eight new electric ferries, the P-12 model, from the Swedish manufacturer Candela, known for its electric boats.
Candela's electric boats are recognized not only for their high efficiency but also for the technology that enables such performance. The company designs computer-controlled vessels with hydrofoils that lift the boats above the water. This innovation allows the batteries to last significantly longer, enabling faster travel over greater distances.
“The P-12 is designed to create zero-emission water transportation systems that offer significant improvements over traditional ferry services,” explained Gustav Hasselskog, CEO and founder of Candela. “Unlike outdated systems that rely on large, slow, and inefficient conventional ferries, the Candela P-12 is a smaller and faster unit that allows for much more frequent departures, delivering passengers quicker. Essential services will be just a few minutes away by boat.”
Saudi Arabia plans to use the Candela P-12 in its desert metropolis NEOM, which is currently being developed along the Red Sea. The city has purchased eight P-12s, marking the largest commercial order in Candela's history. The vessels are expected to be delivered starting next year.
By utilizing computer-controlled hydrofoil vessels to elevate the boats above the water, Candela can reduce energy consumption by over 80%. This means that the boats can travel five times the distance with the same battery capacity used by standard electric boats. Alternatively, they can operate with a much smaller battery, providing the same range.
The new Candela P-12 can accommodate up to 30 passengers and has a range of up to 100 km with a 252 kWh battery. This is more than sufficient to meet most coastal transportation needs. The ferry is equipped with a pair of Candela's own C-POD motors, delivering a combined peak power of 340 kW (456 hp). The vector thrust provides agile maneuverability, including lateral movement when necessary.
The P-12 can be quickly charged using DC fast charging. For the Candela boats, a typical DC car charging station, similar to those found in parking lots, is all that’s needed. This means they can utilize existing dock infrastructure and inexpensive charging units.
The P-12 not only reduces the energy costs associated with commercial ferry systems but also offers a much smoother and more comfortable ride, even in choppy waters. Because the boat doesn’t pitch and crash against waves but stays above the water, even passengers sensitive to motion sickness find the journey pleasant.
