In addition to the unusual battery performance following the update to iOS 18, the new version of iPadOS 18 is also causing issues with Apple’s mobile devices. This has led the Cupertino company to temporarily halt the rollout of the iPadOS 18 update for iPad Pro tablets featuring the M4 chip.

The company has stopped signing updates for these iPads, meaning it will no longer be offered to users during the update check, and Apple’s servers will not activate the update if it is installed in another way. Apple confirmed that it has “temporarily removed” the update to “address an issue affecting a small number of devices.”

According to user posts on Reddit and MacRumors forums, the iPadOS 18 update bricked M4 iPad Pros, rendering them unresponsive to user actions. While not every owner of an M4 iPad Pro who updated to iPadOS 18 experienced this failure, it affected a significant number.

Apple is offering replacements to users affected by this issue, indicating a serious error—typically, devices can be restored to recovery (or DFU) mode as a last resort if a software update fails.

Some affected users reported that they first installed the iPadOS 17.7 update before attempting to update to iPadOS 18.0. Version 17.7 is primarily provided as a security update for those not yet ready to transition to the entirely new iPadOS 18, and the upgrade path from 17.7 to 18.0 may not have been tested as thoroughly as the update from 17.6 to 18.0.

The iPadOS 17.7 update is still available for these M4 iPad Pros, and users should install it if they want the latest security fixes while waiting for Apple to resolve issues with iPadOS 18. Apple continues to sign the iPadOS 18.0 update for other iPads, including the iPad Air M2.
