Peugeot has unveiled its new electric vehicle, the e-408, featuring a fastback design. It shares a platform with the Peugeot e-308 but boasts a distinct powertrain and styling aimed at competing with well-known rivals such as the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2.
One of the main differences between the e-408 and its sibling, the e-308, is the battery. The Peugeot e-408 is equipped with a larger 58.2 kWh battery, providing a range of 453 km on the WLTP cycle. However, this range is less than that of the Tesla Model 3 Long Range and Polestar 2 Long Range, which offer 628 km and 657 km respectively.
Peugeot defends its decision regarding the relatively modest battery size by stating that the average daily commute for a C-segment car buyer is just 45 km. Nevertheless, many electric vehicle buyers consider range an important factor when choosing a specific model. There is currently no information on whether the e-408 will have a 98 kWh battery pack, which is available in the Peugeot e-3008 and e-5008.
Charging speed is another area where the e-408 falls short compared to its competitors. With a maximum power of 120 kW, this model is significantly slower than the Kia EV6, which offers 240 kW.
Despite these drawbacks, the Peugeot e-408 does have its advantages. Its aerodynamic design, with a drag coefficient of 0.28, enhances efficiency. The vehicle is powered by a 207 hp electric motor that delivers 332 Nm of torque. Although official acceleration figures have yet to be released, this model is expected to outperform the e-308, which can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.8 seconds.
Visually, the e-408 is nearly identical to its internal combustion engine counterpart, except for the slim āeā badge at the rear. According to Peugeot, this design choice was intentional to maintain the appealing aesthetics of the 408. Inside, the e-408 features the brand's signature i-Cockpit system with a compact steering wheel and a raised 10-inch instrument panel. The interior is complemented by a 10-inch infotainment display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a dedicated i-Toggle touchscreen.
The Peugeot e-408 will make its debut at the Paris Motor Show later this month, with European prices starting at ā¬43,900 for the Allure trim and ā¬45,900 for the GT trim.
