The Tesla electric pickup caught fire after crashing into a device intended specifically for extinguishing fires.
The Cybertruck collided with a fire hydrant in Harlingen, Texas, near a local Bass Pro Shop store. According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle ignited β firefighters who promptly arrived on the scene extinguished the flames only on their second attempt, dousing the vehicle with a large amount of water.
The police report does not mention the driver and does not clarify whether there were any injuries.
Interestingly, last week Tesla released detailed instructions on how to rescue a Cybertruck in similar situations:
βIt is not recommended to use fire foam, and to cool the battery case, only water should be used.β
As noted by Futurism, citing a report from Austin Fire Chief Teira Smith in 2021, Tesla vehicles may require between 30,000 to 40,000 gallons of water to extinguish β roughly 40 times more than what's needed to put out a conventional gasoline vehicle fire.
This incident marks the second fire involving a Cybertruck. The previous one, unfortunately, resulted in the death of the driver (who lost control, crashed into a concrete pipe, and perished in the burning vehicle).
